I have not been actively doing art because of personal issues.  

But not to fear!  I'm not dying and I didn't lose an arm or anything.  I was sad, but now I'm OK.  My mom, friends, and coworkers are very good to me.

I'm taking it easy in December and then come January I'm going to begin work on my comics for 2012.  I may do less fan comics this year in favour of some more original stuff.  This includes redoing and relaunching Velharthis, which I'm very excited about.

You may notice that Velharthis is down until then.  There's an explanation page and everything for you.  I will also be doing a blog and stuff, though I haven't posted on it in a month because that's when my personal issues began.  But I'll resurrect it.  I just need to settle into a schedule again.  

I was thinking of taking free sketch requests some time soonish.  Will post about that when I'm able.

I'm slowly going through and modifying the art in my gallery.  Some ancient stuff is being deleted.  Anything left will have the comments feature disabled.

I thought about it for a while and even though DeviantArt encourages this feature to be enabled I really don't see I have any need for it.  It will take a while to go through all the pieces to convert them, just because it's such a boring job.  I started with older pieces and I'm working back.

Otherwise, I haven't done a whole lot of art since August, though I'll have some new stuff to post soon.

Fan Expo was this weekend.  More details later.  First, I wanted to share about a fundraiser I had at Fan Expo this weekend.

On Monday, Canadians were hit with the news that Jack Layton, a popular national politician, had died of cancer at the age of 61.  He lived in Toronto and there was this big state funeral and everything for him here on Saturday.  Many manly tears were shed.  Even if you didn't vote for his party or agree with his ideas, he was a kind man and good listener and loved Canada.

On Thursday at Fan Expo I drew this for him because I couldn't go to his funeral: [link]

And people were like "That's pretty cool can I have a print?" but I didn't want to make a profit off of a man's death, especially Jack, so I said sure, but I would donate everything to charity and take nothing of my own.  I didn't even keep the cost of the prints.

I am happy to let everyone know we raised $300 for Prostate Cancer Canada!  It was actually $291, but I like to round numbers so I put in an extra $9.

People were really kind.  Someone found a loonie after buying a print from me and gave it to me for the cause.  Other people shared their experiences of Jack with me.  One gentleman told me his girlfriend had started work with the NDP (the party Jack led) on the Monday of Jack's death.  Some people gave me extra money, so long as it was going straight to charity, so some people put in more than $3 per print, which was awesome.  People who bought the picture were very diverse.  Lots of children knew who Jack was, even small children.  Some pointed the picture out to their parents.  Others brought friends over to buy prints, or bought extra prints for friends.  I sold out of prints twice.  There aren't any left over because people bought every single one!

The proof of Jack Layton's specialness certainly showed itself to me over the weekend.  I was very touched.  Thanks to everyone that gave, or helped to promote the fundraiser, or just liked the print.  We did good.

I've submitted the donation and as promised here is the proof.  I was going to wait and do this Monday but i was so excited by the results I went online right away and gave the money over:

I had mentioned in the previous journal that my friend Chantal was going to be with me selling t-shirts and buttons but something came up for her and she can't go.  

Again, I will be at table A269 in the artist alley.  Find the Xbox booth and I am in the artist alley next door.

Also, if you're planning to attend the convention on Saturday, a note that they are holding the state funeral for Jack Layton at Roy Thompson Hall the same day at 2 PM.  The hall is like right next door, so I would really encourage people to take transit because I have no idea what traffic will look like: [link]

I'll have to itemize everything because there are so many thoughts.  I will be expanding some of these into their own journals once I get the chance, perhaps.

1) Otakuthon.  Montreal was great!  But we didn't sell too many things.  The venue seemed to have expanded too large for the numbers of attendees, so more dealers and artists were struggling for a small piece of a smaller pie.  It happens.  Thanks to everyone who stopped by.  I will write a more detailed account later.

2) Fan Expo is happening August 25th to the 28th.  My table is at A269 in the artist alley.  You will find a floor plan and schedule here: [link] are listed as Velharthis Comics.  I will be tabling with my friend Chantal who makes buttons and t-shirts.

3) Filthy Figments!  I have a new comic and it is available through a pay comic site called Filthy Figments!  The name of my comic is Verte et Rouge, and is a watercolour adult comic set at the start of the French Revolution.  However: This site is NOT SAFE FOR WORK and you should not be accessing it if you are younger than 18 years old.  ---> www.filthyfigments.com

4) Velharthis. This is a big one.  I haven't discussed my webcomic in a few months, and that's because I sat down and thought about where I wanted to be with it in the next year or so.  As it stands, I could never publish it.  Why?  Because it's not in a publishable state.  Therefore, I have decided to restart the comic from chapter one.  

This process will obviously take several months, and I have already started.  All the chapters will be redrawn and some of the story will change to be more cohesive.  I will also be overhauling the website to better tie into today's social media and be easier for people to share the comic when they like it.  I am hoping this overhaul to be complete by May 2012.  By that time I also hope that all this backwork will mean that I can regularly update the comic several times a week.  The bonus is that everything will look WAY nicer and make more sense.

5)  Fan Comics:  The overhaul of Velharthis means I will be devoting less time to fan comics, so if you're reading this and are wondering about when a new Zelda fan comic is coming out... it will be done when it's done and I'll tell you.  

6) People keep asking to use my art.  The majority of requests are asking to use my fan art.  Please don't ask.  Just use it.  Just don't use it for profit.  More on that here: [link]

7) Note for future convention attendees: someone spilled an iced coffee drink on my comics at Otakuthon.  It was an accident, but this is why attendees are banned from bringing drinks and food into dealers and artists areas.  Even if there aren't signs, please drink them outside.  I lost a handful of comics and had to throw them out, and that almost made me cry.

Canada Post is working again.  I'm not happy that the government forced them back to work because the union wasn't just making a money grab (the union is genuinely concerned about the vitality of the corporation because if it stops being profitable, the pensions disappear, and so do future jobs, etc).  Anyway, I won't get too much into it, but the relevant idea is that the mail is working again, so if people want comics, please order.  PLEASE!  Because I don't need the money so much as I want people to freaking read my stuff.

Looks like I will be attending Otakuthon again this year.  This event is in Montreal on August 12-14.  It's a pretty great anime convention.  I will be in the Artisans area (as opposed to the Artist Alley, but I'm sure they're very close).  Also thanks to a cool friend I also have a table this year at Fan Expo on August 25-28.  Yes, it is four days this year.  I'm going to probably die.  I don't know if I'll be able to afford Fan Expo ever again, so yeah.  

Canada Post is still on strike.  The government is forcing them back to work but that has not happened yet.  When it does, I will post here again about the comics and I will see about selling some prints and watercolours and jazz.

I haven't worked on art much the past week.  I had the week off so I took time to catch up on other things, visit my mom, and just rest and relax.  It was a good way to charge my batteries before a busy summer.

I wasn't able to post about Anime North right away because I got a really bad cold at the convention. I'm still sick but recovering.

Despite being totally drained of energy and getting sick, Anime North was very fun and I got to see a lot of people I sometimes only get to see a handful of times a year.  Thank you to everyone who came by to look or to buy something or to say hi.

I sold some of my watercolours in the Gallery Momiji, which means there are others still available.  I'm planning to put them up on Kijiji or Etsy or something.  I have to work that out.  In the meantime, I'm focusing on selling the new comics.

I did manage to get a table in the Comic Market for Anime North in Toronto this year.  That convention is happening May 27-29.

I want to have 2-3 new comics ready.  I will have Dark Mirror 4 ready, since I never got that one out last year.  It is currently inked and scanned.  I just need to tone and text that guy.  I am now undertaking a sequel to Queen of Hearts, a comic I did in 2007.  It's an original comic.  The first was based off a French princess and the new one is based off the story of an Italian princess who became an Archduchess of Austria.  I am also trying to work on a sequel to my Last Airbender (because if you call it Avatar now it confuses people) comic I debuted last year.  I'm worried this series is going to be long considering my plans for it.  Ah well.  I think I can cut out some dumb parts.    I was going to have another project ready but I think I'm putting that one off until July.  It was an 18+ project so I was going to have difficulties selling it anyway.

Lots to do, as you can see.  I was sort of sick today and yesterday.  Today I was fatigued enough to stay home from work in the afternoon.  It's mostly a fever and sometimes chills and body aches and some fuzziness in my head and the fatigue.  It only started yesterday and I could be coming down with a cold.  I really hope I don't because the last cold I had at the end of December really kicked my ass and it took me a week and a half to recover and there is so much to do!

As for the help: If someone got a table for Anime North and has room to spare, would they like to share with Frank Hong?  [link] looking for a space.  Help him if you can.  He's an amazing artist.

I realized there was no group devoted to the Captain N show, so I made one

Join if you like, and contribute if you have anything related.  I'm going to try to do up some art soon.  I have this long list of things I have to finish myself.  Also, I can't believe I couldn't just get the name "captainn" or "captain-n" because some people have been camping those names for years.  :/

Anime North Comic Market signup is March 5th.  I'm really excited about that!  Hopefully I snag a table.

I have some stuff to print and scan.  I tried to scan something at home, but my scanner isn't handling colour properly right now.  It's very strange.  I'm going to have a friend look at the whole set up because it hasn't been optimal for a while now.

I signed up this year with Anime North's Gallery Momiji, which is the convention art show.  I bought up two big panels and I hope to cram them with original watercolours to sell.  I will post all the items for sale here beforehand so people who are interested in something can plan ahead.  

This means you'll see a lot more watercolours being posted here in the next few months.  I am still doing digital stuff, but I didn't do watercolours for ages, so now it seems I'm making up for lost time.

I will have more information here on the art show closer to the convention.  And if I get a table there will be information on that here as well.

I have a bunch of stuff that is almost ready to post here.  Looking at my past updates, I'm not that much more quiet than I was in 2010.  I wish I had more news, but I don't like to post about most stuff until I can show it.
