Advice

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 30, 2013, 1:54 PM

Looking for some input on what is the best way to go about selling off my watercolours. These aren't prints: they're actual, one-of-a-kind watercolours. Was thinking Etsy, or eBay or something like that.

Anyone done this before? What were your experiences like?

I don't have much experience in this area, but you could try asking my friend Annie :iconmaina:, as she is primarily a watercolour artist. I don't know how much she uses dA anymore, so maybe try emailing her via the address on her website?

I've used etsy to sell my watercolors. The only thing is that it costs you a very small fee to list them and the listing expires after three months (or so), so don't list a ton of stuff at once. Kinda feel it out and see what the response is to your listings.

Thanks that helps. :) I may test it.

Based on what other people have said also, I think Etsy may work better for you because of your established fan base. I don't have that (maybe some day soon once I relaunch Velharthis-- May cannot come fast enough).

I used to use Etsy. I still have listings there that I'm just waiting for them to expire or get purchased (probably will expire though lol). I've since moved to Storenvy. I've only been there for a few weeks but I like it more than Etsy mainly because it doesn't cost you anything to list items, nor do they charge a transaction fee, and the backend is easier to use (to me). Since I don't really actively promote my stuff hardcare like my life depends on it, I don't really get that much visibility on Etsy. (I do find shopping there more enjoyable than shopping on Etsy though, and I like the different tools they have for people to find products, like the Treasuries). I think in general you're better off with an Etsy or a Storenvy for art because the audiences there are more receptive to that; eBay imo is only helpful if you're just needing a place to handle auctions and expect most of the traffic to get there from you pimping your own link.

Yeah, I saw you guys using Storenvy and was going to ask about it last week but I never did, heh. I have seen people use eBay in the past (not too long ago) so I wasn't sure.

And that should say "I do find shopping there more enjoyable than shopping on Storenvy" lol

I don't sell my art on etsy, but I do sell fabric dolls on etsy that I make. There are a lot of artists on etsy who sell their work and are very successful at it. I love etsy for selling things! You definitely have to get a presence there to do a lot of selling though. The groups and forums are a great way to advertise your stuff on etsy. If you already have a large fan base here though I don't think you'll have a problem getting it there. Its really simple to set up a shop there too... you can also choose different ways to get paid which is great. I've always had a great time at etsy, so I only have good things to say about it. Let me know if there is a specific question you have. ^_~

I don't know how much of a fan base I really have here. Like, I have followers, but I don't really sell anything. But that's really my fault cause I haven't sat down to think about why that is and make a plan... until now. So I figured I should ask here and start a dialogue and get people's general thoughts on what worked for them.

This was very helpful. Thanks!

Ah, I understand. I think you could easily sell commissions on here if you wanted to. <3 Another way to get followers is by creating a facebook page for your art if you haven't done that already... also, if you join Etsy you can sign up to do a giveaway through someone's popular blog. That way your shop gets views! Its a great way to promote.

You're welcome! ^_~

What about Storenvy? People say nice things about that website. Or yeah, Etsy is good too. Be sure to charge a good price, since it's an original!
